Job Description:

The Katherine Thomas School in Rockville, MD is seeking to hire a teaching assistant to work on a one to one basis with a middle school student for the 2020/2021 school year. The school serves students in elementary and middle school with language and learning disabilities, autism, intellectual disabilities, and/or other health impairments that affect their learning. We address the individual needs of each student to facilitate success at home, school, and in the community. Work hours are 8:30 am to 4:15 pm M - F.

This 1:1 Teacher Assistant will be placed with a middle school student with multiple disabilities. This position will provide additional support by assisting the student with hygiene and bathroom skills, self-advocacy and organization.

The job responsibilities would include:

  • Implement and strictly follow student’s Behavior Plan
  • Support student with academics, regulation and behavior during breaks out of the classroom
  • Document behaviors
  • Implement instructional lessons or develop activities under the guidance of and direction of a special education teacher
  • Assist and monitor student under the Special Education teacher's supervision and direction
  • Organize the classroom

Experience and Skills:

Required Experience for the Teacher's Assistant:

  • High School Degree
  • Experience with students with special needs highly preferred
  • Team Oriented, Reliable, Professional Attitude
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to maintain a calm, supportive, and firm approach with learning disabled students
  • Ability to use professional judgement and assume the risk in working with students/children with behavioral challenges
